DEFINATION OF BONE CHINA:

Question:

What is Bone China?

Answer:

Although we all use bone china crockery in our daily lives very few are aware of this material.Bone china is a body which was first developed in Britain in which calcined bone ash is a major constituent. This material is characterised by high whiteness, translucency and strength.Apart from this extreme good quality clays like engligh india,Raj mahal china clay,Eklera china clay are also used in the body.

Production usually involves a two stage firing where the first, bisque, is without a glaze at 1200 degree centigrade which gives a translucent product and then after glazing, fired at a lower temperature 1000°C .

The first use of bone ash in ceramics was by Mr.Thomas in 1760 to make a type of soft paste porcelain at his Bow China works. In the late 18 th Century he undertook further developments, and subsequently popularised it, by mixing it with china clay, kaolin and china stone to compete with the imported Oriental porcelain.
